Handmade knitted clothes for little ones – the perfect baby shower or everyday spoil. Naomi’s Joy is fortunate enough to have Granny Carmen knit brand new garments that we can sell on our online store. All proceeds from the sale go towards the care of abandoned or orphaned babies.

We interviewed Granny Carmen to find out about her heart around knitting for the needy.

It’s something I have always had a passion for.  This is one way I can help others.  It’s my form of art and it doesn’t matter what my age is, I can still help people and make a contribution.

Q:  How did you start knitting?

I was five years old at the beginning of the 2nd World War.  My mom got wool from Sawars to knit socks and balaclava caps for soldiers.  It was then that I learned to knit socks.  When I made mistakes I would go to Mom and she would explain and help correct them.  By the end of the war I was fully competent at knitting with 4 needles.

Q:  Why do you love it?  What makes you passionate?

It’s great therapy because I have a bit of rheumatism in my hand and knitting keeps my fingers working.

Q:  How does it make you feel knowing that you are helping people?

It’s something I have always had a passion for.  This is one way I can help others.  It’s my form of art and it doesn’t matter what my age is, I can still help people and make a contribution.

Q:  Where does your wool come from?

I put a percentage of my pension aside to buy wool and I also rely on donations from people who are perhaps clearing out or passing on wool.  Sometimes people will give me some money towards buying wool.  It’s through me receiving gifts which allows me to pass on the blessing.

Q:  If someone wants to buy you some wool, do you have a preference?

I love the 4 ply wool for my baby outfits which go to the hospital when a baby is born.

Q:  What is your favourite thing to knit?

I love the blankets and my biggest challenge is a baby blanket which you knit on one needle.  I love challenges.  I love doing a little design work, too.
